Australian Border Force (ABF) officers targeted the man for a baggage examination after he arrived on a flight from Chile.
During their examination, officers x-rayed one of the man’s bags and discovered anomalies in the bottom of the suitcase. The bag was then deconstructed, revealing a white paste.
Initial testing of the substance returned a positive result for cocaine.
The estimated total weight of the substance is five kilograms. Further forensic testing will be conducted to determine the exact weight and purity of the substance.
The matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP), who charged the man with importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, namely cocaine, contrary to section 307.1(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).
The maximum penalty for this offence is life imprisonment.
The man was remanded in custody to appear in Sydney Central Local Court today.
