Police have been told the victim, a 56-year-old Collingwood man was in the lift at a Hoddle Street apartment block around 7.50am.

Three men got in to the lift shortly after and one of the men started punching the victim to the head in what was an unprovoked attack.

The victim sustained multiple facial injuries including swelling and bruising.

The offender is described as Caucasian, approximately 30-years-old, 170cm tall with short dark hair and he was unshaven.

He was wearing dark top and pants and blue Nike runners.

Police have release images and CCTV of three men who may be able to assist with their enquiries.
