Council is encouraging all residents to take part in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count and help discover which birds share our local backyards and outdoor spaces.
To help residents get involved, Brimbank is hosting a guided bird walk with a local expert on Wednesday 25 October, 6-7pm at Selwyn Park Playground, Albion. This will involve a slow and easy walk around vegetated areas near Selwyn Park to search for birds.
Mayor of Brimbank, Cr John Hedditch says National Bird Week is a week every year to celebrate our amazing and unique bird life.
“The events will help residents engage with local wildlife, and contribute to one of the largest citizen projects in Australia and ultimately have a greater appreciation for the unique environment of Brimbank.
“All residents in Brimbank, with and without backyards, can count anywhere they can see birds – backyards, schoolyards, parks, botanic gardens and join BirdLife Australia in their aim to count more than 1.5 million birds in 7 days.
“The study will contribute to national bird count records, and Brimbank will receive specific data for our municipality. This is important information that over time can indicate changes in local bird populations and help us carry out conservation management.
“Council is committed to helping residents connect with their native wildlife and the environment they call home. A Brimbank with a strong connection to the environment will help ensure our natural areas stay healthy and resilient into the future,” Cr Hedditch said.
Last year more than 1.4 million birds, including the colourful Rainbow Lorikeet, were spotted in backyards across the country. BirdLife Australia is encouraging more people to get involved this year to learn about their local birdlife.
To further celebrate National Bird Week, Brimbank will be hosting an educational and exciting birds of prey flight display show called Birds of Brimbank at Calder Rise Neighbourhood Park on Sunday 29 October, 10.30-11.30am to celebrate National Bird Week. Come along and see Australian native birds up close and in full flight.
