GovHack is a nationally held competition that brings creative people together to use open government data in new and innovative ways. Thousands come together to form teams, develop projects and participate in a movement that helps build trust between government, industry and communities.
Mayor of Brimbank Cr John Hedditch invites local community members to participate in the Council hosted event and collaborate with like-minded people to unlock the power and potential of open data.
“This is a unique and exciting opportunity for passionate and creative individuals to transform our public data to create new and innovative solutions specific to Brimbank.
“Participants can access our public data on parks and open spaces, playgrounds, public toilets, garbage collection zones and dog walking zones. It’s a terrific way to gain better understanding of our area and generate some unique apps, websites, visualisations and artistic displays for Brimbank,” Cr Hedditch said.
At the end of the weekend teams will submit their projects for judging. Teams will create a project page, proof of concept and a video that tells the story of how the data can be reused, with many of the concepts being community apps. Brimbank Council will judge and allocate prizes to the value of $3,000 for participants who create the most innovative apps and programs using our data.
This event is a real celebration of Council’s technical and creative capacity and willingness for transparency within its community. Council strongly supports GovHack and its capacity to engage government and its communities.
Each year GovHack successfully connects citizens with government and business organisations to help unlock the social and economic value of open data.
