Mayor of Brimbank, Cr Margaret Giudice encouraged all community members to show their support for the project.
“We know our community is getting excited about our plans for St Albans Leisure Centre, and rightly so.
“The current leisure centre is old and tired and desperately needs to be replaced.
“We’re planning to create a world-class health and wellbeing hub that will play a key role in delivering better social and health outcomes for the community – centred around a state of the art leisure and aquatic centre.
“It will be a landmark project for Brimbank and the region,” the Mayor said.
Council estimates replacing the leisure centre with a health and wellbeing hub will cost in excess of $53 million.
Council has been advocating to the State and Federal governments to attract an investment of $25 million into the project.
“We want to show the State and Federal governments just how much support this project has in the community, to help our efforts to attract investment,” the Mayor said.
Confirmed indoor aquatic and leisure features include:
Other features will include a café, multiple wet and dry change rooms, including family change, and a crèche.
Council is in negotiations with short-listed community organisations to explore opportunities for co-location that will enable delivery of integrated health and wellbeing services to the community.
A design team will also shortly be engaged to complete a design before construction starts next financial year.
Council has allocated $1.8 million in its 2018/2019 Budget for design of the project. Construction is proposed to start in 2019.
