The Mercedes station wagon was parked at a school at the intersection of Ohea and Ross Street with a six-month-old baby girl in the back.
The mother of the child was standing next to the car talking to a friend when two males approached the vehicle about 3pm.
One of the men, described as about 30-years-old, got into the vehicle and drove off.
The other male fled the scene south down Ross Street in a silver Toyota Camry sedan with a rear spoiler.
The friend of the mother, a woman, jumped on the bonnet of the Mercedes in an attempt to alert the male offender to the baby inside the car.
However he ignored her and continued to drive with her on the bonnet for about 400 metres, before she fell off.
Incredibly, the woman was unharmed.
The car was located dumped, with the baby safe and well inside, near Haig Street a short time later.
Police are yet to locate the offenders.
The man who stole the car is perceived to be of European appearance with dark wavy hair and was wearing a light coloured t-shirt and dark pants.
The other male is believed to be in his late 20’s with dark hair tied up in a bun and was wearing a green t-shirt and dark pants.
