The incidents, which have become more frequent in recent months, date back to February last year.
The thief has gained entry to several commercial buildings in the CBD and Docklands areas by using a crowbar, before targeting safes or items of value.
Detective Sergeant Haydn Beale said the thief had stolen a significant amount of cash.
“We’re not talking about hundreds of dollars, this man has stolen hundreds of thousands in cash,” D/Sgt Beale said.
“At this stage we believe he has committed upwards of 30 burglaries.”
Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the links between these incidents and believe the same offender was involved in all of them.
“He strikes between the hours of 3am and 7am and dresses in a trucker cap and wears a dark coloured hooded top,” D/Sgt Beale said.
“We believe the man is in his late 20s or early 30s and uses a backpack or tubular bag to store the stolen items.”
