Investigators have been told a 19-year-old Hillside man left a university along Kernot Road about 9.30pm on Saturday, 16 September.
The man then walked down several more streets before walking through the Lincoln Square Park area.
While in the park, a group of 6-8 males approached him.
One of the males then punched the victim several times in the face, injuring his eye socket and knocking several teeth out.
The male then told the victim to lie on the ground and took his wallet, including bank cards and identification, and a backpack containing a laptop and other personal items.
He then walked the victim towards the steps on to the park terrace and demanded the victim unlock his iPhone.
After that the group left, heading in a north-west direction along Bouverie Street.
The victim then went to a nearby tram stop and a woman called triple zero (000) for him.
It’s believed the group then used the stolen card at a kebab shop and convenience store on Smith Street in Fitzroy about 10:30pm that same night.
The group is believed to be aged in their teens and all are perceived to be of African appearance.
The male who approached the victim is described as being about 190cm tall and at the time was wearing a black puffer jacket and a black beanie.
Investigators have released images of a number of people they wish to speak to regarding the incident.
Anyone who recognises the males or with any information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
