As the weekend approaches and families get ready for the second week of school holidays police are hoping for just one thing……...that everyone is safe on our roads.

Over the past week seven people have sadly lost their lives going about their everyday commute.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said no one sets out for their day not expecting to come home to their loved ones.

“Of course people don’t expect these tragedies to occur, but I think maybe this is half the issue, all road users including pedestrians and cyclists need to consider it could happen to them,” AC Fryer said.

“Three drivers, two pedestrians, one motorcycle rider and one cyclist, four of which are our vulnerable road users are now no longer with us.”

    The collisions include:

    • On Thursday 29 June a 19-year-old woman was killed when her car ran off Willow Grove Road in Fumina South and crashed into a tree about 5.15pm.

    • On Friday 30 June a woman was struck and killed when she was hit by a truck on Geelong Road Footscray about 2.10pm.

    • On Sunday 2 July a 29-year-old motorcyclist lost control on Cheltenham Road in Dandenong and crashed into a tree about 7.20am.

    • Also on Sunday 2 July a 79-year-old woman killed after being hit by a car in Richmond about 7.15pm.

    • On Monday 3 July a 42-year-old cyclist lost her life when she was struck by a garbage truck in Brighton about 10am.

    • On Thursday 6 July, a male driver died following a collision with a truck on the Western Ring Road at Fawkner about 2.45pm.

    • Also on Thursday 6 July, a motorist who is yet to be identified was killed when a car crashed into a tree on the Great Ocean Road in Marengo just after 2.30pm.

“In two of these incidents police are investigating whether speed and or impairment was a factor, and in the case of the motorcycle crash we believe the bike was stolen.

“Hindsight is a wonderful thing but sadly with road trauma so many incidents are avoidable.

“With the holidays upon us many people are out and about, everyone is moving around sometimes with a different mindset - with always something else to do.

“It’s quite simple to me really; all road users have to take responsibility for their own safety on the roads - you have to make sure, you get to your destination safely.

“Consider the conditions, consider other road users, consider and obey the law, and most importantly consider the impact if you were no longer here.”
