Police will allege he concealed two large bags of the border controlled drug in his personal belongings before entering Australia.

Yesterday (Wednesday, 5 July), Australian Border Force (ABF) officers at Sydney International Airport conducted a bag examination on the passenger after he arrived on a flight from Qatar.

During the x-raying of the man’s luggage, ABF officers detected two large bags of organic material concealed within the lining of an item of luggage. Initial testing returned a positive result for the border controlled drug cocaine.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) attended and arrested the man. He was later charged with  importing a commercial quantity of border controlled drug, namely cocaine, contrary to section 307.5 of the Criminal Code 1995 (Cth).

The exact weight and purity of the cocaine will be subject to further forensic testing.

The man was scheduled to appear at the Central Local Court (Sydney) today (6 July).

The maximum penalty for this offence is life imprisonment.
