Police seek help to identify a man and woman following CBD assault and theft

Police are investigating after a man was assaulted and robbed in two separate cowardly acts in Melbourne’s CBD on New Year’s Day.

    The incidents occurred on Elizabeth and Franklin streets about 1.10am on 1 January.

    It is believed a man approached a 36-year-old Melbourne man on the corner before a short argument broke out.

    Police understand the offender then punched the victim once in the head causing him to fall onto the road.

    The victim sustained life threatening injuries in the incident.

    At this point, a group of people unrelated to the assault stopped and took the victim’s wallet which had fallen out of his hands.

    They have then used the credit card for a number of purchases on Elizabeth Street and Reservoir.

    Police have released two images of people they would like to speak to in relation to the incident.

    The male in relation to the assault, is perceived to be Indian Sub-Continental appearance, in his early 20s, wearing a grey hooded jumper, white t-shirt and jeans.

    The female in relation to theft and deception, is perceived to be Caucasian, in her mid to late teens, wearing a black jumper and black leggings.

    The victim underwent surgery after a serious head injury and has since been released from hospital.
