Investigators have been told a man attended business on at least four separate occasions and told staff he was there at the request of the owner to complete some works.
The man then told staff the owner had authorised the works and that they could pay him with cash out of the till.
Staff have then handed over varying quantities of cash to the man who the leaves the business and is never seen again.
Investigators believe that the same offender is responsible for deceptions at a fast food outlet in Spencer Street on 1 July, a pharmacy in Bentleigh on 5 July, a fast food outlet on Exhibition Street on 9 July and an ice creamery on Lonsdale Street on 12 July.
Investigators have released images of a man that they believe may be able to assist with their investigation.
