Government support for 2019 Dance Massive festival

The Australian Government will provide a further $200,000 to support the 2019 Dance Massive contemporary dance festival.

This comes in addition to $100,000 to be provided by the Australia Council.

Minister for the Arts, Senator Mitch Fifield, said the Australian Government is thrilled to be involved again with this biennial Melbourne event, which began in 2009 and has evolved into Australia’s largest contemporary dance festival.

“Dance Massive is a true celebration of dance which showcases a wide range of contemporary works from emerging talent to more established dancers and choreographers,” Minister Fifield said.

“The Government is pleased to support the ongoing viability of this significant biannual Australian arts and cultural event.”

A consortium of performing arts organisations, including Arts House, Dancehouse and Malthouse Theatre, in association with Ausdance Victoria, comes together through Dance Massive every two years to collaborate, promote and celebrate contemporary dance.

Dance Massive 2019 will be held over 13 days between 12-24 March and is expected to again attract large audiences and deliver significant creative and professional development opportunities for the Australian dance sector.

Next year’s festival promises to be just as big as the 2017 event, which featured 300 artists and 147 performances attended by more than 15,000 people. It also included a hugely successful free public program featuring a large-scale public dance event, Battle Massive, which attracted 3,000 people.

Dance Massive’s impact is further enhanced by an international exchange and delegate program that connects Australian contemporary dance companies with the world.
