The changes announced to aged care in 2012 included a comprehensive review of the aged care sector in 2016-17. This review will inform ongoing reforms to aged care.

“Mr Tune is the ideal choice to lead this important work, due to his extensive work across economic and social policy reform agendas and his knowledge of the aged care system,” Minister Wyatt said.

“Mr Tune was Secretary of the Department of Finance between 2009 and 2014 and has also held senior positions in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, and Treasury.”

Mr Tune is currently the independent Chair of the Aged Care Sector Committee which provides advice to the Government on aged care policy development and implementation and helps to guide the future reform of the aged care system.

“The Review is an important step in assessing how the system has changed and adapted, and where we need to take the system in the future,” Minister Wyatt said.

“We have a world class aged care system in Australia, which is working to respond to the needs of an ageing population.

“Aged care is traditionally associated with residential aged care, but people want to stay independent and remain in their homes and connected to their family and community for longer.

“The Review will assist us to ensure aged care continues to meet the needs of older Australians, to make aged care more sustainable and affordable, while also offering choice and flexibility for consumers,” Minister Wyatt said.

The final report will be completed by 1 August, 2017.
