At its 19 July Council meeting, Council committed to become a TAKE2 founding partner organisation, making Brimbank City Council now a key part of the first state government-led voluntary climate change pledging initiative in Australia. The program supports the State Government’s long-term target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 for Victoria.
Chair of Brimbank Administrators Mr John Watson said the pledge built on the actions already underway through Council’s Greenhouse Reduction Strategy – which has already seen a 7 per cent cut in Council’s greenhouse gas emissions.
“Brimbank City Council is already tracking well towards Council’s Greenhouse Reduction Strategy target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent by 2022/23, compared with 2011 emission levels.”
“Council is taking action to create a more sustainable Brimbank through programs that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and deliver cost savings to the community,” Mr Watson said.
“For example, Council has replaced more than 11,600 street lights across Brimbank with energy efficient lights, reducing emissions from street lights by 2,659 tonnes of CO2 per year – that’s the equivalent of taking 380 cars off the road.
“In addition to the significant emissions reductions already achieved, Council has implemented measures that will deliver further emissions reductions in the coming years.
“These include building sustainability into the design of the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre, designed to five star Green Star – an international rating system for green building construction.”
In June 2016, Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio announced Victoria’s target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and launched TAKE2, a new pledge system delivered by Sustainability Victoria to bring government, business and the community together to achieve the collective goal.
Sustainability Victoria CEO Stan Krpan said TAKE2 was a way for all Victorians, including state and local government, businesses, community, educational organisations and individuals, to contribute to reaching Victoria’s target of net zero emissions by 2050.
“Councils have been leading the way on climate change at a local level and we are thrilled to have so many of these leaders, including Brimbank City Council, support the program by signing up as Founding Partners.
“I know that showcasing their leadership through TAKE2 will inspire others to take action on climate change.”
