Brimbank Highway Patrol members conducted a traffic operation on the Western Ring Road over the long weekend focusing on drivers illegally using the emergency lane and other driving offences.
More than 200 infringement noties were issued to drivers illegally using the emergency lane, 20 of who were talking or texting on their mobile phones while doing so.
All drivers were issued a $311 fine for failing to obey an emergency stopping lane only sign.
As well as illegal lane users they also charged four drivers with drink driving offences and four other drivers had their cars impounded.
Brimbank Highway Patrol Sergeant Andy Oakley said that he considered the operation to be a success with a lot of support shown by motorists travelling past the police operation.
“Drivers were pretty happy to see us out there, cheering and showing their support as they drove past,” Sergeant Oakley said.
“This operation was about road safety but seems to have resonated well with those road users who obey the road rules.”
This operation was part of Operation Arid.
Operation Arid commenced at 12.01am Friday and will run until 11.59pm on Monday.
Along with alcohol and drug testing, Operation Arid will focus on fatigue, speed, distraction and seatbelts.
The annual Labour Day long weekend operation covers the entire state in an effort to reduce the number of lives lost on Victorian roads.
