Googles mobile operating system, Android, is likely to release its latest version before the end of the year, possibly in September or October.

No one is sure what to call it yet, or even whether it is version 7.0, but for now it is known as Android N. Google has invited Android fans to suggest a name. It must begin with the letter N and follow the custom of naming each version after a sweet. (The current version is Marshmallow.)

Users can also download Android N in its Developer Preview form and test its new features. The developers will use their feedback to improve the version before its final release. If you want to try this, see www.google.com/android/beta. Here are some of the features of Android N.

    Multiwindow
This lets you see apps in a split screen. It has been available on Samsung and LG phones for a while, and will now be a standard feature on all Android phones and tablets. This might become available for earlier Androids before the release of Android N. It is already possible to use it in Android 6, as a hidden feature. Some tech sites explain the workaround method to activate it.

    Google Assistant
The new Assistant software is an improved version of Now, which helps you do things like find a restaurant and make a reservation.

    Direct Reply Notifications
You don't have to leave your current window to answer incoming messages. You can reply within the notification that appears at the top of the screen.

    Notifications Bundles
Notifications from the same app will be bundled together like a single notification. You can then open the bundle to see the messages. This used to be a feature of Apple's iOS, but that now puts all notifications in time order. It is also possible to turn off future notifications from a particular app.

    Doze on the Go
Android 6.0 Marshmallow has a setting called Doze, which saves your battery by stopping background computing when your phone is not in use.  However, it only works if the phone is sitting still. Doze on the Go does the same thing even if your phone is moving, for instance when it's in your pocket.

    Night Mode
Night Mode helps to reduce eye strain from a bright display at night. It gives the screen a yellow tint. You can also adjust the brightness and tint.
