With tens of thousands of racegoers saddling up to snap up a slice of history, Victoria Police will be out in force to ensure crowds enjoy the day safely and responsibly.

This means there will be a highly visible police presence across the day, not only at the racecourse itself, but around transport hubs moving commuters to and from the track.

Acting Superintendent John Kearney said police encouraged racegoers to go out and enjoy the day, but warned that offensive, illegal and antisocial behaviour would not be tolerated.

“This year’s races are a great opportunity to soak up the atmosphere with friends and family, and it’ll be especially exciting with last year’s back-to-back winner Winx aiming for a third straight Cox Plate victory,” Acting Supt Kearney said.

“What we don’t want to see are people engaging in antisocial behaviour and spoiling the fun for the rest of the crowd.

“That’s why we’ll be alongside racegoers on the journey to and from – as well as during – the race to make sure the event runs as safely and smoothly as possible.”

Police will particularly focus on alcohol-fuelled violence, public order offences and road safety.

There will also be booze buses deployed to prevent road trauma.

“We shouldn’t need to remind people that there is absolutely no excuse for drink or drug-driving, and Saturday’s races are no exception,” Acting Supt John Kearney said.

“We’re urging patrons to be considerate of others and look out for their mates.”

Traffic delays and limited parking are anticipated in the lead-up to the sold-out event, so police encourage racegoers to plan ahead and use public transport where possible.

Bag searches will also be carried out on the day.
