Brimbank Mayor Cr Lucinda Congreve said Princess Street St Albans was a key pedestrian link between St Albans Train Station, the St Albans Community Centre (STACC) and Bowery Theatre, and the Errington Precinct.

“We want to create a safe and vibrant setting that will help establish this precinct as a hub for the arts, recreation and activity.

“Princess Street is a key connection for local residents, traders, park users and theatre-goers – so it’s important that this is a safe place where people feel comfortable getting around or meeting up with friends.

“The design takes inspiration from the work of Brimbank-grown artist and provocateur, the late Leigh Bowery, after whom the Bowery Theatre at STACC was named.

“With splashes of colour and high-impact lighting, this design will help create a fun place that extends the theme of the Bowery Theatre ‘Be bold’ out into the street,” Cr Congreve said.

Princess Street will remain open to cars, with a new shared zone to be created along with safe pedestrian zones.

The $1.2 million Princess Street Upgrade is being funded by Brimbank City Council ($950,000) in partnership with the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program ($250,000).

Work will begin in early January and is expected to finish in March 2019.

Some temporary road closures will be needed to complete the project, with closures planned for February 2019. Access to the Princess Street car park will be maintained via Main Road East throughout construction. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to look out for and follow detour signs.
