For Terry Charles, (51, Delahey) the Sons of the West program kicked off at the right time, when he was at a low point in his life, dealing with depression and the effects of heavy medications.

A Western Bulldogs supporter all his life, Terry credits the free program for men focused on healthy living and healthy lifestyles that helped him get out of a slump and give him healthy leg up.

Terry says becoming a Sons of the West team member played a large part in getting him on his way. By committing himself to show up to the group each week, Terry found the energy and motivation to get up and get moving. He has taken part in the ten week program each year since it began.

As well as a focus on group exercise for all abilities the group takes part in dedicated health prevention and promotion workshops and events, as well as presentations from doctors, sports people and inspirational speakers.

The group gives men like Terry a way to learn about important health prevention strategies and what they can do to be on top of their health - something Terry wouldn’t otherwise have exposure to.

Sons of the West brings together men from all walks of life – anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to join.

“Last year we even had an 85 year old man with a broken leg join in the group – if he can do it, anyone can!” said Terry.

A strong advocate for men taking an active role in their health, in 2018 Terry will become a facilitator for Sons of the West. He even plans to begin leading his own walking group for men in Brimbank later in the year.

Terry’s advice for men thinking of joining Sons of the West: “Get out there and do it – it’s a lifesaver”.

Mayor of Brimbank Cr Margaret Giudice said the program assists men to not only become fitter and healthier but to feel more connected within their community.

Sons of the West doesn’t just gives men a boost to their physical health. Becoming part of a social group gives a sense of belonging which can do wonders for mental wellbeing.

“The group is welcoming for all men of all abilities. It is this inclusive spirit that makes me so proud Brimbank continues to deliver Sons of the West each season,” said Cr Giudice.
