Mr Mitzevich is currently the Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia and is highly regarded in the gallery sector. He has extensive experience having successfully led three galleries in three states, including as the Director of the University of Queensland Art Museum and the former Newcastle Region Art Gallery.

Mr Mitzevich also serves on a number of bodies including Adelaide Contemporary, the South Australian Living Arts Festival, and the Art Gallery of South Australia's Foundation and Contemporary Collections Committee. He was previously Chair of the Council of Australian Art Museum Directors and has served on the Board of Governors of the Helpmann Academy.

Mr Mitzevich gained a Bachelor degree and Post Graduate Diploma of Fine Art from the University of Newcastle and was a lecturer at its School of Art.

He has a reputation for driving innovation and working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders in the private and public sectors. His experience, energy and vision will ensure that the NGA continues to provide all Australians with access to rich cultural experiences.

The Government would like to acknowledge and thank outgoing Director, Dr Gerard Vaughan AM, for his service to the NGA since 2014. His outstanding leadership, professionalism and scholarship in the role have ensured that the Gallery has continued to enrich and embolden Australian culture and is well served by the partnerships he has nurtured with national and international stakeholders.

I would particularly like to acknowledge his achievements in bringing a renewed focus to Australian works held in the collection and the delivery of high quality programs that have continued to delight and inspire audiences.

The NGA plays an important role in shaping Australia's visual arts through its national collection of works, diverse exhibitions and outreach programs. It is responsible for the development and maintenance of Australia's national art collection and exhibits works of art for the public.
