The making of the declaration means that Australian residents harmed as a direct result of that terrorist attack may seek a one-off payment of up to $75,000 in financial assistance through the AVTOP scheme.

On the evening of 14 July 2016, a lone attacker drove a truck through the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, injuring and killing innocent revellers celebrating Bastille Day.The terrorist attack killed at least 84 people and injured more than 200 people.

At least five Australians were injured as a result of the attack.

The Australian Government condemns the terrorist attack and extends our deepest sympathies to the victims and their families.

The declaration brings the total number of overseas terrorist acts declared by the Australian Government – and for which Australian residents can receive financial assistance under AVTOP – to 12.

The Australian Government's AVTOP scheme ensures Australian victims of terrorist events overseas have access to the same kind of financial support that states and territories provide to victims of crime in Australia. It is an important acknowledgement of the pain and suffering experienced by these victims of terrorism.

Further information on applying for financial assistance through the AVTOP scheme is available through the Department of Human Services on 1800 040 226, or on Department of Human Services website.
