Witness appeal for North Melbourne robbery
The incident took place on Flemington Road near Dryburgh Street when the victim, a 58-year-old man, was approached by a man just before 4.30pm.
The victim, an interstate visitor, was approached from behind by the offender who attempted to grab a black satchel from his hand.
A struggle took place in which the victim was punched to the head before he ran out onto the median strip in the middle of Flemington Road where the struggle continued.
The victim was punched to the ground and struck several times before he released the satchel.
A number of passers-by intervened and chased the offender west on Curran Street before losing him in a block of flats on Sutton Street.
The offender was perceived to be of African appearance, aged in his mid-20s with a wiry build.
He was wearing a black windcheater, black pants, a grey cap and runners.
Investigators believe that due to peak-hour traffic in the area there is a likelihood that someone may have dash-cam footage and are appealing for that person to contact Crime Stoppers.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
