Australian Border Force (ABF) officers targeted the woman for a baggage examination on her arrival into Sydney International Airport from the Russian Federation on Friday.

During their examination, officers observed that her empty laptop bag and backpacks were unusually heavy. The officers deconstructed the bags, uncovering a white powder in the lining.

Initial testing of the substance was positive for cocaine. Further testing will be done to confirm its exact weight and purity.

The woman was charged by the Australian Federal Police with importing a commercial quantity of border controlled drug, namely cocaine, contrary to section 307.1 (1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).

The woman is next scheduled to appear at Central Local Court on 27 October, 2016.

The maximum penalty for this offence is life imprisonment.
