Police prepare for the cup carnival
With more than 310,000 punters expected to attend over the four main race days, police will be focused on alcohol-fuelled violence and anti-social behaviour.
Commander Russell Barrett said police were reminding racegoers to celebrate responsibly.
“Our focus is making sure that everyone arrives and gets home at the end of the day safely,” Cmdr Barrett said.
“It’s a great time to be in Melbourne, but unruly, offensive and anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.
“Police will be present on all four major race days throughout the carnival.”
Commander Barrett said police had been working with the Victoria Racing Club to ensure the most appropriate police presence.
“We are again advising people to keep in mind that it may take some time to get into the track this year, with bag searches at every entry point,” Cmdr Barrett said.
“We understand people want to get inside but we’re encouraging everyone to factor this in and be patient at the gates.”
Booze buses will also be onsite to detect any drink or drug-affected drivers.
“As always if you’re going to drink, plan ahead, use public transport or plan a designated driver.”
Last year, police evicted a total of nine people and arrested five people across the four days of the carnival.
Those caught doing the wrong thing face significant penalties, including on-the-spot fines of $622 for being found drunk in a public place and $777 for being caught drunk and disorderly.
