Official opening of advice service for children in care and youth detention

The Australian Government has provided $1.1 million for the Children in Care and Youth Detention Advice Service, which is being delivered by the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency.

With offices in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs, the Children in Care and Youth Detention Advice Service is providing community outreach and liaison to ensure remote Indigenous communities right across the territory have the support they need to engage with the Royal Commission.

The Service is offering a range of assistance, including providing face-to-face and telephone advice for those seeking to engage with the Royal Commission to help them understand their legal rights and responsibilities and how to access legal financial assistance.

The Government is also providing:

• financial assistance for legal representation of people attending interviews and appearing as witnesses for the Royal Commission;
• over $3 million to ensure witnesses, their families, and the community can access additional counselling and support.
