Two detectives were on patrol on Swan Street, Richmond when they observed a man allegedly writing graffiti on the wall of a building at the intersection of Stanley Street about 12.25am on 4 February.

The officers challenged the 19-year-old Surrey Hills man and a struggle ensued during the arrest.

During the course of the struggle, a second unknown man ran at the police and punched the arresting officer in the face before fleeing the scene.

The detective was taken to hospital with a serious facial injury and has since been released.

The 19-year-old was charged with resist arrest and criminal damage and has been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 4 May.

Investigators have released further images of a man they wish to speak to in relation to the incident.

The images show a distinctive tattoo on his calf.

The man is also described as being in his late teens to early 20s and at the time of the incident was wearing shorts, a short sleeved top and white runners.
