Four Charged Following Assault on Tourists

Police have arrested a group of males after four French backpackers were allegedly assaulted under Princes Bridge in Melbourne overnight.

Investigators have been told a group of nine travellers were listening to music under the bridge when they were approached by the youths at 1.30am.

A fight was initiated, with four of the travellers allegedly assaulted.

Four people were arrested by police on Southbank Promenade shortly after the incident.

A 14-year-old Braybrook boy will face a children’s court charged with intentionally and recklessly cause injury, theft, assault with a weapon, other assault-related offences and commit an indictable offence while on bail.

A 16-year-old Moonee Ponds boy and 15-year-old Lalor boy were charged with intentionally and recklessly cause injury, theft, assault with a weapon and other assault-related offences.

They will appear at a children’s court at a later date.

A 20-year-old Tarneit man was charged with intentionally and recklessly cause injury, theft, assault with a weapon and other assault-related offences, and has been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 10 May.
