Call for art to celebrate Aboriginal culture in Sunvale

Brimbank Mayor Cr John Hedditch said Council was seeking expressions of interest from artists to create a single or multiple artworks as part of the park’s planned circuit path.

“Creating an indigenously-themed circuit path was one of the many wonderful ideas for this park that was suggested by our community,” Cr Hedditch said.

“Council has worked closely with the community to plan and build a high-quality park with wonderful green spaces and facilities – we want to add to this with a significant artwork that celebrates the traditional owners of this land.

“We’re seeking an artist to create a permanent artwork that promotes greater understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal cultural heritage.”

Expressions of interest are open to Indigenous artists and artists working in consultation with Indigenous communities.

Expressions of interest will be a two stage process.

Four shortlisted artists will each receive $2000 to develop concepts for presentation to the Project Selection Panel which will make a recommendation as to the awarding of the commission. The total project cost will be $120,000.

Initial expressions of interest close on Friday 1 December 2017, at 12noon.

Shortlisted applicants will be required to submit final concepts by Monday 19 February 2018, with the artwork to be installed in late 2018. For details including the artist brief, visit brimbank.vic.gov.au/sunvaleEOI.

Construction of the park began in June this year with works expected to finish in early 2018.

The high quality park will include a number of exciting features including:

• a multi-purpose skateable space
• basketball half court
• dedicated play spaces
• a large green ‘kick a ball’ space
• exercise equipment
• an edible garden and much more.

All existing trees will be kept and new large shade trees will be planted.
