The man is believed to have attended a service station on Cemetery Road in a maroon Toyota Camry sedan, displaying stolen registration plates 1CW-1GD, about 4am on 20 August.

He failed to pay for fuel and drove off towards the Calder Freeway.

Days later, police were called to the intersection of Flinders and Russell streets just after 6am in response to a driver asleep at the wheel of a Toyota Camry on 30 August.

The Toyota Camry was displaying stolen registration plates of QOJ-493.

The vehicle drove off and when police attempted to intercept the vehicle, the drive failed to pull over and a pursuit was initiated.

The vehicle then collided with a bus at the intersection of Rathdowne and Victoria Streets in Carlton.

It was last seen travelling in the Royal Parade area.

Police have release CCTV of a man they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

He is described as Caucasian in appearance, approximately 180cm tall with a thin build.

Police are urging anyone with information or who witnessed the Melbourne incident and anyone who may have video footage of the driving prior to, or of the collision, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
