Three AFP members recognised in Australia Day Honours list

Three members of the Australian Federal Police (AFP), with more than 88 years of policing experience between them, have today been named on the 2017 Australia Day Honours list.

Assistant Commissioner David Sharpe, Detective Sergeant Andrea Humphrys, and Detective Sergeant Mark Elvin will each receive the Australian Police Medal in recognition of their work across a broad range of AFP operational areas.

The Australian Police Medal is awarded for distinguished service by a member of an Australian police force.

AFP Commissioner Andrew Colvin congratulated the officers on their award and thanked them for their ongoing service to both the AFP and the Australian community.

“David, Andrea and Mark’s inclusion in today’s honours is a testament to the dedication they have displayed across their policing careers,” Commissioner Colvin said.

“On behalf of the AFP and the Australian community, I want to thank them for their hard work over many years, and congratulate them on this fantastic achievement.”

Assistant Commissioner Sharpe joined the AFP in 1988 and is currently responsible for the Protection Operations portfolio, overseeing the officers responsible for high-level protection services to individuals, establishments, airports and events. His AFP career has included work in South East Asia, counterterrorism, serious and organised crime and as the AFP’s Manager of the Americas, Europe and Africa.

Detective Sergeant Andrea Humphrys has worked on numerous serious, long-term criminal investigations since graduating from police recruit training in 1981, and is currently based in The Hague. Her career has included roles in the investigation of the downing of Malaysian flight MH17, and as part of the AFP’s 58thContingent to the UN peacekeeping missing to Cyprus.

Detective Sergeant Mark Elvin started with the AFP in 1991 and worked in ACT Policing roles, including community policing and drug investigations, before taking up further work in the AFP’s people smuggling and counter terrorism areas.

Assistant Commissioner Sharpe, Detective Sergeant Humphrys, and Detective Sergeant Elvin will receive their medals from the Governor-General at a later date.
