Police have been told a man flagged down a taxi outside a fast food outlet on Queens Parade just after 2.30am.

It is believed the male refused to pre-pay the fare to Frankston when he produced a knife.

An altercation occurred and the driver received a laceration to the hand before the offender stole a small amount of cash and ran from the scene.

The 26-year-old driver ran after him for a short distance before losing sight of him.

The offender is described as Caucasian in appearance, aged 20 to 25-years-old with fair hair and a solid build.

He was wearing a dark coloured hooded jumper and jeans.

Police are keen to speak to any witnesses in the area at the time of the incident.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
