With thousands expected to attend the event, police will be patrolling at each of the entry gates at Caulfield as well as in and around the racecourse.

The focus will be on alcohol-fuelled violence, public order and road safety.

“We want everyone to enjoy the event and to get home safely,” Glen Eira Inspector Drew Morgan said.

“Our message to the small minority of punters who choose to do the wrong thing is that unruly, offensive and anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.”

Anyone who attempts to smuggle alcohol into the races will be evicted immediately.

Inspector Morgan said booze buses would be operating around the venue to detect drink and drug-affected drivers.

“If you’re going to drink, plan ahead, take a taxi, use public transport or plan a designated driver,” Insp Morgan said.

Parking is limited in the area and by-laws will be enforced if people chose to ignore them.

“If you do park in the vicinity, ensure you lock up your car, remove valuables and be mindful of your surroundings and personal safety.

“It will take some time to get everyone through the gates, so we’d encourage racegoers to be patient and factor that time into their planning for the day.

“This is one of the biggest events of the racing carnival and we’ve seen good crowd behaviour up until now – we want this to continue.”

Anyone found drunk in a public place faces an on-the-spot fine of $622 while those caught drunk and disorderly can be fined up to $777.
