Next steps for Hampshire Road upgrade begin

Brimbank Mayor Cr Lucinda Congreve said Council had awarded the tender for the project which would include new traffic signals, bike lanes and lighting along the northern end of Hampshire Road.

“This project will significantly improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists in the fast-growing CBD of Sunshine.

“Council is excited to move forward with the next stage of the Hampshire Road Master Plan – which is transforming the heart of Sunshine into an attractive, well-planned space that is easy to negotiate,” Cr Congreve said.

This section of works focuses on the area between Ballarat Road and the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre. Works will include:

• traffic signals at Foundry Road
• bike lanes in both directions
• two raised pedestrian crossings across Hampshire Crescent
• new street lighting.

These works build on already completed improvements to Hampshire Road, between Devonshire Road and the Sunshine Train Station, and between Service Street and the Man lifting cow statue.

The $1.66 million project is being funded by Brimbank City Council ($1.147 million), along with $513,000 from the Victorian Government under the Towards Zero Safer Roads Program.

The tender was awarded to Patten Pavement Services, with works to begin in early 2019 and expected to finish in mid-2019.

Some temporary road closures will be needed to complete the works. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to look out for and follow detour signs.

Access to shops, businesses and residences in this stretch of Hampshire Road will be maintained throughout construction.
