Message to rethink how you view disability

In a joint project with Hobsons Bay Council, Maribyrnong Council and Metro Trains, Brimbank Council will install messages on platforms at Sunshine, St Albans and Watergardens train stations.
Brimbank Mayor Cr Lucinda Congreve said the messages were an important reminder that we all need to reflect on how we think about disability.
“Whether it’s being more open to the many things a person with disability can achieve or the fact that many disabilities are invisible – these messages challenge some of the stereotypes facing people with disability,” Cr Congreve said.
Brimbank Council will celebrate International Day of People with a Disability with an event on Friday 30 November to launch the Duke Street Neighbourhood House Pathways to Participation project. The project will support people with disability to find and undertake volunteer and work experience roles.
“Volunteering and work experience can be a wonderful way to engage with the community, develop skills, make friends and build self-esteem – yet for some people with disability, there are significant obstacles to getting involved.
“The Pathways to Participation project helps to clear – or find a path around – some of these hurdles,” Cr Congreve said.
The event will finish with a flashmob performance, by Duke Street Community House Flashmob, in the foyer of the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre.
