Don't let thieves ruin your Christmas

Assistant Commissioner Tess Walsh said by taking a few easy measures, a lot of pain and annoyance could be averted this Christmas.

“While there is no good time to be a victim of theft, the holiday period is a particularly painful one,” AC Walsh said.

“During December last year, there were more than 13,000 incidents of theft.

“That equates to more than $25 million worth of property - cash, appliances, jewellery, equipment and food just to mention a few.

“Thieves will literally steal presents off the backseats of cars and from underneath Christmas trees.

“We’re also seeing the theft of personal items while people are out and about.

“Our shopping precincts are busy this time of year and thieves capitalise on these opportunities.

“Mobile phones, wallets and handbags can easily be stolen in a crowd if left unattended or if their own is distracted.

“We want to encourage the community to do all they can to make sure they’re making it as hard as possible for these crooks so they don’t ruin their Christmas.

“While we can ramp up our patrols, we can’t be there all the time making sure you’ve locked your car or house, or that you’ve put your valuables out of sight in your vehicle.

“The tips can be used as a checklist for families. They’re pretty simple and could really save a lot of heartache.”

The tips include:

• Cars should be locked, valuables hidden inside or removed, and parked in secure garages where possible.

• Keys should not be stored in obvious places inside the house.

• Install good quality locks on doors and windows at home, and keep them locked, even when you’re at home.

• If you’re going away for the holidays, ask a neighbour to bring in your mail and bins

• While out shopping, make sure to keep your personal items close and do not leave them unattended.

• If you need to store items in your car, make sure they’re out of sight.
