Residents must register at sustainability.vic.gov.au/detoxyourhome and choose a preferred timeslot to drop off chemicals.
Household chemicals can be dangerous and harmful to your family and pets.
The Detox your Home program, in partnership with Sustainability Victoria, allows you to dispose of these potentially hazardous products in a safe and easy manner, without harming your health or the environment.
Mayor of Brimbank, Cr Lucinda Congreve said it’s important to keep our homes safe and take this opportunity to clean out the shed, bathroom, kitchen, laundry and garage to get rid of unwanted toxic products.
“It’s a good reminder that residents must keep chemicals out of the regular rubbish collection where they could explode, ignite, leak or mix with other chemicals.
“Chemicals should never be poured down the drain where they could pollute waterways, harm wildlife and vegetation, contaminate drinking water supplies and make rivers and beaches unsafe for swimming.
“The good news is you can reduce the risk of poisoning and environmental pollution as well as improve recycling rates by registering for the Detox your Home program,” Cr Congreve said.
The products collected are recycled for recovery and diverted from landfill.
Less toxic items including household paint, batteries, gas bottles, florescent lamps and tubes, can be disposed of at Council’s Resource Recovery Centre at Stadium Drive, Keilor Park throughout the year.
